Kelly McShane
Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)
Kelly McShane, PMHNP, is a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at EMDR Trauma Therapy Center who provides psychiatric evaluations and medication management for adults in Jacksonville and Northeast Florida. His approach to psychiatric care is compassionate, individualized, and focused on treating the whole person-not simply a diagnosis or collection of symptoms.
A 2024 graduate of Jacksonville University, Kelly combines evidence-based psychiatric treatment with an understanding of the many factors that can influence mental health, including physical health, nutrition, sleep, activity, environment, lifestyle, relationships, and personal experiences.
Kelly works with adults experiencing a range of mental health concerns, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, ADHD, and bipolar disorder. He strives to create a comfortable, judgment-free environment where patients can speak openly about their symptoms, concerns, treatment goals, and life experiences.
Substance Use Disorders and a Personal Understanding of Recovery
Kelly has a particular interest in substance use disorders, addiction, and recovery. His path into psychiatric care has been influenced by both his professional experience and his own personal journey with substance use and recovery.
That lived experience gives Kelly a meaningful perspective on the challenges of addiction and the process of recovery. He understands that a person is far more than a diagnosis, symptoms, or past choices-and that asking for help can require tremendous courage.
Kelly recognizes that recovery is rarely one-dimensional. Lasting improvement may involve addressing mental health symptoms as well as physical health, relationships, lifestyle, environment, support systems, and the circumstances affecting a person’s everyday life.
He brings this perspective to his work while recognizing that every patient’s experience with addiction, mental health, and recovery is different.
Whole-Person Psychiatric Care
Before becoming a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, Kelly worked as a registered nurse in outpatient dialysis clinics, caring for medically complex and underserved populations.
Working with individuals managing chronic and serious medical conditions reinforced his belief in the connection between physical health and mental health. Medical conditions, stress, nutrition, sleep, physical activity, relationships, environment, and emotional well-being can all affect how a person feels and functions.
Those experiences helped shape Kelly’s whole-person approach to psychiatric care and medication management.
Psychiatric Medication Management-and More
Kelly recognizes that psychiatric medication can be an important and effective component of mental health treatment. At the same time, he believes good psychiatric care should look beyond medication alone.
He is a strong advocate for healthy nutrition, regular physical activity, and identifying vitamin or nutritional needs that may contribute to overall health and well-being. His approach is collaborative and individualized, helping patients understand their diagnosis, treatment options, medications, and other strategies that may support their mental health.
At EMDR Trauma Therapy Center, medication management can also be coordinated with counseling and psychotherapy when appropriate and with the patient’s consent. This collaborative approach allows patients to receive therapy and psychiatric services as part of a more comprehensive mental health treatment plan.
PTSD, Anxiety, Depression, ADHD & Bipolar Disorder Treatment
Kelly provides psychiatric evaluation and medication management for adults experiencing conditions including:
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Anxiety disorders
- Depression and mood disorders
- Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
- Bipolar disorder
- Substance use disorders and addiction
- Co-occurring mental health and substance use concerns
Treatment is individualized based on each patient’s symptoms, history, needs, preferences, and goals.
Compassionate, Judgment-Free Mental Health Care
Kelly strives to provide psychiatric care that is compassionate, practical, individualized, collaborative, and free of judgment. He wants patients to understand not only what they are experiencing, but also the treatment options and everyday changes that may help them move forward.
For Kelly, psychiatry is not simply about reducing symptoms. It is about helping people better understand their mental health, strengthen the foundations supporting their physical and emotional well-being, and create healthier, more fulfilling lives.
